We are pleased to announce that the Ho`oulu Hawaiian Lecture Series will once again be offered in
2010.  In this second year of bringing Ho`oulu learning experiences to the community, we advocate for
the regeneration of Native Hawaiian life-ways and the nurturing of land wisdom and environmental
kinship.

This year’s theme was inspired by experiences revealed during and subsequent to `Aha Ho`ano – a
24 hour traditional ceremony and vigil that was held at Hauola and Hikinaakala Heiau in November
2009.  Organizers have chosen to focus on the ancient paradigm of Wailua as a religious and
political center of Kaua`i.  Supported by a system of wahi pana or storied and celebrated places that
stretched from the highest point of the island, all the way out to the sea, Wailua was regarded as one
of the most sacred places in all of Hawai`i.  Thus, the emphasis of the 2010 Ho`oulu Series is on the
profound importance of indigenous understanding of sacred histories and places of oral-based
traditions.  All presentations will take place at the Aston Aloha Beach Resort in Wailua, enabling
presenters to address and share of traditions and places directly within the environs of the program’s
focus.

Dedicated to the perpetuation of ancestral knowledge and practices unique to Hawai`i Nei.  Offered
as a monthly program for the Kaua`i community, Ho`oulu is inspired by the extensive teachings of
Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai - a traditional hula seminary established on Kaua`i in 1945.

"Hula touches upon every facet of Hawaiian existence.  The pupil of hula is groomed to understand
that our discipline is inextricably connected to numinous and natural realms of environment,
atmosphere and humanity.  The dedicated study of traditional hula in the forms of ceremony, chant
and dance has provided us with volumes of oral documentation that link us to the knowledge and
experiences of our ancestors."
