The words to this `olelo no`eau or ancient Hawaiian proverb refers to a person who is respected for his or
her depth of knowledge. A play on the word `eli`eli means profound or deep, and `Aina`ike literally
translates as, "Land of knowledge." `Aina`ike is an ancient name place located in the Kona district of
Kaua`i.
It is the basis of this `olelo no`eau that has inspired us to create a unique collection of Hawaiian cultural
program offerings...one that will honor and celebrate the intriguing history, places, philosophies and
traditions that are deeply rooted in the primal culture of Hawai`i Nei.
The Kaua`i Heritage Center promotes and facilitates Hawaiian concepts of service that motivate and
inspire kela or excellence. Along with the traditional hula school, Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai, it serves as
one of the two primary Hale Na`auao or "Houses of Knowledge" through which the Ka`ie`ie Foundation
provides cultural education opportunities for the community.
It is our mana`o or belief that the perpetuation of Hawai`i's cultural traditions and values is possible if we
actively contribute to the cycles of teaching, sharing and learning.
We provide a full range of learning experiences designed to revitalize a Hawaiian sense of place in this
modern day and time. We constantly look to the traditions of Hawai`i's ancient past for exemplary models
that help to guide and enhance our future.
