We are delighted to bring you news of upcoming events, programs and other
wonderful cultural experiences including our Ho`oulu Hawaiian Lecture Series and
Workshops each month.  Other exciting news include `AHA HULA 2009 - A HULA KAHIKO
CONCERT featuring Kumu Hula, Këhaulani Kekua and Hälau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai,
Open Enrollment to the hälau for its Fall-Winter Semester of Classes and the hälau's
return to the 2009 Festival of Native Peoples in Cherokee, NC!

Hälau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai is a traditional seminary offering formal instruction in Hawaiian chant,
dance, music and other associated arts of Hawaiian knowledge.   Email

Hälau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai has been invited back for a return
appearance at the
2009 FESTIVAL OF NATIVE PEOPLES
in Cherokee, North Carolina in July 16 - July 18 this summer!  
Pictured (R) are the Totonac from Mexico performing an
ancient ritual of homage to the sun with rotations honoring
the seasons, solstices and equinoxes.  Below (L), We are thrilled
to share a photo op with these incredible native performers.
Below (R) `Öpu`ulani Kekua and Tabitha Booth pose with
newfound friends - the Calhoun `ohana who ran one of the
food booths at the festival. Bottom (L), `Aikäne Alapa`i and
Kumu Hula, Këhaulani Kekua lead the hälau in chants from
the Kumulipo and bottom (R), Hälau `ölapa ready themselves
for a performance of Pele migration chants.

Preparations are in full swing for this year's festival.  Members
selected for the Hälau's performing company include: `Aikäne
Alapa`i (Alaka`i), Stacy Sproat, Nanea Sproat Armitage, Darcie
Gray, Keali`iwahine`öpu`ulani Kekua, Annann Eu, Hau`oli Smith,
Eva Joy Miner Peru, Bula Soares, Kalei Cadawas, David Sproat,
John Kaneholani and Nelson Armitage.

Hosted by the Eastern Band of Cherokee, the FESTIVAL
OF NATIVE PEOPLES feature indigenous performers from
throughout the world.  It is an honor to bring the traditions
of our Hawaiian ancestors to this prestigious event.

`Aha Hula 2009 is a Hula Kahiko Concert -- an exciting and rare opportunity to experience a performance
offering of sacred chants and classical dances of ancient Hawai`i.  Hälau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai is a
traditional hula school established on Kaua`i in 1945.
